How do you capture the journey of ten years in ninety minutes? For renowned stage and television actor and seasoned director, Raymond Lauchengco, the answer to this tall order is music. On November 25, through song and dance, Raymond hopes to tell the story of the Diocese of Cubao in “Roots to Fruits”.

Set at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the musical concert will celebrate every experience that the Diocese has gone through the past decade. Highlights include performances from world acclaimed homegrown talents and choir groups including the Hail Mary the Queen Children’s Choir, Kammerchor Manila, Novo Concertante and the Sta. Teresita Parish Choir. The different youth groups of the Diocese are also preparing a special upbeat number.

Raymond will also employ the ingenious play of lights, sounds and even aerial dancers in the show. But what really excites him most is the showcase of talents from the different sectors of the church, “this concert bring together stirring performances from the three segments that comprise the church – the clergy, religious and the laity. The audience knows most of the performers on a pastoral level. But wait till they see the other side of these people. They are in for a very pleasant surprise!”

The concert will also incorporate a special tribute to those who were present during the birth pains of the diocese but have since passed on. There will also be moving vignettes about the challenges and gains of the past decade. Bishop Nes Ongtioco is expected to impart where the Diocese is headed in the next ten years. Another much-awaited highlight is the grand performance of the anniversary theme song composed by Frs. Ron Roberto and Gelo Parlan. Special performances from guest celebrities jazz up the celebration.

Raymond reveals that when the projected was presented to him, it was hard to say “no”. “I’m a sucker for anniversaries. I like to be part of a celebration, a milestone. This project is close to home because not only is it a hallmark, an event, it is also a spiritual salutation,” he shares.

Raymond is no stranger to church work as he is an active member of the Bread of Life Ministries and records for the group’s albums. He even directed its 30th anniversary that was held at the SMX last year.

He welcomes the unique challenge of presenting the concert theme. “Roots to Fruits speaks of a progression of time and God’s faithfulness throughout the ten years and beyond,” Raymond says. “With music, we can uplift, encourage, inspire and motivate. It is a wonderful medium to praise God and celebrate His goodness,” he adds.

Raymond adds that the concert will was from celebratory to fun to poignant. He feels that the concert will present the diocese as composed of “real people”. “We would like to present the essence of service and building a community of the faithful as both fun and edifying. It should reflect the joy of living and serving,” he discloses.

At the end of the concert “Roots to Fruits, Raymond hopes that everyone will leave the Big Dome with the assurance that “God is truly good!”

“Roots to Fruits” will also have Gino Cruz as Musical Director, Sushi Reyes as vocal arranger/coach and Jon Supan as choreographer. (Tessa Mangahas, Diocese of Cubao Media Office)
